Essential
for any day hike:
- 2 canteens with water
- Lunch and trail snack
- Rain gear (Gore-tex or similar is best)
- Sweater or light jacket
- Map and compass
- Daypack
What to wear:
- Good hiking boots
- Wool hiking socks with wicking liner socks
- Hat
- Wicking underwear
- Hiking pants
- Wicking shirt
- Avoid cotton, especially in cold weather
In cold weather, you'll also need:
- Extra sweater and/or heavy jacket
- Warm hat
- Gloves
In hot weather, you may want:
- Sunglasses
- Extra water
- Towel
- Bathing suit
Optional stuff, but good to have:
- Walking staff
- Knife
- Flashlight
- Fire starter, or waterproof matches
- Whistle
- Extra bootlaces
- Survival blanket ("space blanket")
