Sat Oct 24 to Sun Oct 25: Bike hike, Connecticut Air Line Trail, Willimantic to Pomfret, CT. Overnight camping at Mashamoquet Brook State Park. Cost is $25. Bring a bag lunch and a trail-style bicycle (wide, knobby tires).
Mon Oct 26, 7:30-8:30pm: Troop meeting, community house. For those interested in the Architecture Merit Badge, Mr. Miller will spend 30-45 minutes reviewing requirement number 4.
Fri Oct 30, 4-5:30pm: As part of the Architecture Merit Badge requirements, Perkins Eastman Architects invites Troop 11 to their office at 422 Summer Street in Stamford to discuss the vocation of an architect. Hosted by Troop 11 dad Michael Miller. Call him at home at 203-968-2453 with questions.
Sat Oct 31, 8-10am: As part of the Architecture Merit Badge requirements, we have a hard hat tour at the AvalonBay Communities construction site at Belden Avenue in Norwalk. Hosted by Mr. Miller. To complete the Architecture badge, each scout must complete requirement number 5 at home.

Troop meeting, community house. Youth protection training videos will be shown this evening. Due to the sensitive and at times uncomfortable scenarios presented in these videos, every scout must be accompanied by at least one parent. After the videos, the troop will be dismissed.

Troop meeting, community house. Caving permission slip and liability waiver and rifle shooting permission slip are due today.

Sun Nov 29

Clarksville Cave (aka Ward-Gregory Cave), Clarksville, NY. This is a high adventure trip, for ages 13 and over, ranks First Class and above. Meet at 8:30am at the church meeting house, return early evening. Cost is $15. Bring a bag lunch and money for dinner.Permission slip and Liability Waiver are due with a check by November 23.

The cave is an extremely exciting and interesting place. It is also cold (about 50 degrees), dark (totally), wet and muddy. To cope with these challenges, each participant should come equipped with the following:

Helmet: secured with a chin strap. Troop 11 has suitable helments, so let us know in advance if you need one. A bicycle helmet with chin strap will also work well.
Lights: at least 3 independent light sources, one of which must be secured to your helmet. LED "headlights" often used for scouting activities would be fine. A maglite securely duct-taped to your helmet would also work well. We recommend that your backup light sources be carried in sealed plastic bags. Consider bringing spare batteries/bulbs (but those do not count as light sources).
Layered clothing: Since you will get wet and cold, avoid cotton clothing. Wool or polypropylene provide warmth when wet. Since the outer layer will get muddy and abraded, consider a nylon jacket and trousers, preferably old and not valuable. Coveralls work well if you have them.
Gloves: leather work gloves are fine. Try to avoid light canvas gardening gloves.
Boots: An important component, but try to avoid wearing valuable hiking boots which could get very scuffed and muddy. Leather work boots (preferably old) with lug soles are good. Rubber boots are okay. Sneakers are not recommended.
Kneepads: Required. They will protect your trousers from scrapes and tears. We do a lot of crawling and wriggling through tight spots, which is hard on the knees.
Complete spare set of clothes and footwear: To change into for the trip home. Please bring these in two layers of trash bags (to be used to transport your caving clothes on return).

December 2009

Sat Dec 5, 8:45am: Service project. Required for all scouts who want to participate in rifle shooting on December 6. This will be a leaf and trash cleanup around the church. Bring a leaf rake (if you have one) and work gloves.
Sun Dec 6, 2-5pm: Rifle shooting at the Cos Cob Revolver and Rifle Club, 451 Steamboat Rd, Greenwich, CT (across from the Greenwich train station), 203-622-9508. Rifle and ammunition will be provided. No uniforms, no personal equipment. Cost is $15. Permission slip and check (payable to BSA Troop 11) are due by November 23. You must have done the service project on Saturday in order to participate.

Powahay District Klondike Derby. Meet 8am, NSCC Meeting House, return Sunday mid-day. Cost $20. Bring a bag lunch for Saturday, personal winter gear (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, mess kit, warm layered clothing, toilet items). Permission slip due Jan 11.

For outdoors, bring:

Drinking water - prefer water bottles to avoid frozen drinking tubes on camelbacks
Waterproof (e.g., rubber) winter boots
Sunglasses or ski goggles if desired
High energy snacks (e.g., trail mix, granola)

For clothing, bring:

Dress in layers
No cotton
Socks - preferably wool, with extra dry pairs
Polypropylene long underwear
Fleece and/or wool insulation layer
Waterproof and windproof outer layer (shell)
Hand cover - mittens preferred, with liners if desired
Headgear - insulated hat, covering ears ... with scarf or balaclava to cover face, neck

For sleeping gear, bring:

Mummy-style sleeping bag, rated 15 degrees F or lower
Consider sleeping bag liner, space blanket, large plastic trashbag to slip over lower portion of sleeping bag
Sleeping pad/mattress
Stocking cap, scarf and/or balaclava to keep head warm
Non-cotton warm sleep clothes
Consider chemical handwarmers

Mon Jan 25, 7:30-9pm

Troop meeting, community house. Bloody Monday! No uniforms! Wear old clothes that you won't mind getting stained. Swimming (Feb 11) and Skiing (Feb 26) permission slips and checks are due.

February 2010

Tue Feb 2, 7:30: Committee meeting, community house.
Mon Feb 8, 7:30-9pm: Troop meeting, community house.
Thu Feb 11, 7:30-8:45pm: Troop Swim, Stamford Italian Center, 1620 Newfield Ave. Use the south parking lot entrance, and proceed to pool area at the end of the hallway on the left. Bring a swimsuit and a towel. There is no troop-provided transportation for this event. Permission slips are due at the Feb 1 meeting. There is no cost for this activity.
Mon Feb 15: School holiday — no meeting.
Mon Feb 22, 7:30-9pm: Troop meeting, community house.
Fri Feb 26 to Sun Feb 28: Skiing in Ascutney, Vermont. Lodging, food, lift tickets are included in the cost, but bring your own ski equipment, or money for rentals. Also bring a bag dinner for Friday PM, sleeping gear, spending money. Meet 3:30pm Friday at the NSCC Meeting House. Return Sunday late afternoon. Permission slips and a check for $135 (made out to BSA Troop 11) are due at the Feb 1 meeting.

March 2010

Sun Mar 7, 10:30am-3:00pm: Maple Sugar Sunday at the Stamford Nature Center. Troop 11 traditionally operates the colonial maple sugaring exhibit. We need volunteers to come keep the fire going, the sap boiling, and to explain to visitors how the process works. Scouts should wear a Class A uniform and enter the nature center through the back gate and parking area. Bring a snack.

Mon Jun 7, 6:30-9pm: Our scout meeting will take place at the Stamford Fire Training Center at 148 Magee Avenue. It will begin at 6:30; please note that this is 1 hour earlier than the normal start time. The event will run until roughly 9:00 PM. Please come even if you will be late.
Sat Jun 12 to Sun Jun 13: Whitewater rafting, Deerfield River, with overnight camping. Meet at NSCC meeting house 7am Saturday, returning Sunday late day. Cost is $110. Permission slips and checks (payable to "BSA Troop 11") are due on Monday, May 17. Bring personal camping gear, money for snack/meal Sunday PM.
Mon Jun 14, 7:30-9pm: Troop meeting, community house.
